Walk to School Month

This month (May) is ‘Walk to School Month.’ If you usually come to school by car, please try to leave it at home if you live nearby and try to walk, cycle (or scooter!) to school for this month at least. We’ll be distributing badges and certificates to encourage the children to be more active.

The World in our City

On Monday 17th May at 6pm, Year 5 will be performing at one of London’s  most prestigious venues, the Royal Albert Hall.

This performance of ‘The World in Our City,’ is the culmination of a two year singing project that Year 5 have been involved in, led by Westminster and the BBC Singers. It celebrates the rich diversity, history and cultural heritage of London.

A combined choir of 1500 students from Westminster schools will be supported by the BBC Singers as well as dancers from Westminster schools.

Years 2, 3, 4, (5) and 6 will be attending the dress rehearsal at the Royal Albert Hall on the afternoon of Monday 17th May. The children  in these classes will have information about this in a letter, from their class teachers, by the end of the week.

Year 5 will be rehearsing at the RAH for the whole day. They too will have separate letters by the end of the week.

Everyone can also come to Year 5’s evening performance., and we would like to invite Year 5 parents, Governors - indeed all of our families and friends - to the 6 o’clock performance (6pm to 7.15pm) on the evening of 17th May.

TICKET  INFORMATION

  • £1.50 at the door (Door 12)

  • £1.50 plus £1 booking fee and 2% of the booking if booked over the phone.

  • Telephone number of RAH hotline 08454015025

  • YOU MUST GIVE OUR CLUSTER NUMBER UPON BOOKING so that St Mary’s guests sit together and are as near as possible to Year 5 who are performing. Our cluster number is  GROUP 2(5744)

We hope you can come to support Year 5 and St Mary’s, in this exciting  celebration at an amazing venue !

If you can make a banner to bring along as well, even better! We want year 5 to know where their visitors are sitting !

Why not make it a family event to include a picnic in Hyde Park before the performance?

We look forward to seeing you there!

School Governors

Our governors would like to introduce themselves to you and so, most weeks, we will have part of this newsletter dedicated to this. This week, Harriott Tennant introduces herself.

“I was appointed as a foundation governor by the London Diocesan Board for Schools (LDBS) in September 2000 and initially used to come into school to help Miss Bowden in Reception class, which I much enjoyed and which helped me get to know the school and become fully involved. I also helped some older children with their reading.

I am the link governor for music in the school which is the responsibility of Miss Bowden, who has worked wonders in providing opportunities for so many children to participate in music-making.   The school has built up good relations with the Royal Academy of Music and the Wigmore Hall.

I am also link governor for Gifted and Talented and liaise with Miss Glover over this.

For over forty years I have lived in St. John's Wood, and am fortunate that it is an easy bicycle ride to St. Mary's, so from time to time I can call in on the school, where there is always a warm welcome.”

Class Photos

Our school photographer is coming on Thursday to take class photographs. Please pay extra attention to your child’s school uniform on Thursday.

Mobile 'Phones

I just wanted to remind everybody that the children should not be bringing mobile ‘phones to school. If children in the oldest classes come to school by themselves and need to ‘phone a parent when they get to school, they must do this by coming into school through the main door and give their ‘phone to staff in the office as soon as the call is made. The staff will store the ‘phone until the end of the school day. Mobile ‘phones must not be taken into the school playground.

Sunshine and Hats

We are lucky to have so much shade in our school playground and the awnings outside Year 1, 2 and 3 now provide even more shade. However, we also encourage children to use sun cream and hats on bright, sunny days. The school has blue sun hats for sale if you would like one. See Mrs Monaghan after school on Wednesdays. If your child brings a hat from home it must be ‘unbranded’ (no Nike logos, etc!) and, if it’s a baseball type hat it should be worn with the peak at the front!
